Hi Compounders,
The Nasdaq-100 extended its sharp September rebound on Monday, closing at 30,482.35, up 2.83%. From the September 15 close of 28,937.84, the index has gained approximately 5.3% in four sessions, with the latest advance driven primarily by semiconductors and mega-cap technology.
The move comes after a 4.2% gain in August, which brought the Nasdaq-100's year-to-date return to 16.7% as of August 31. August also marked a recovery from the technology-led selloff seen in July.
Key market message: the AI trade has regained momentum, while lower Treasury yields and declining crude prices have provided an additional valuation tailwind.
1. AI Re-Acceleration Drives the Tape
The dominant factor in Monday's session was renewed enthusiasm around AI spending and monetization.
AMD gained roughly 10% and moved above a $1 trillion market capitalization, while Intel advanced 12.2% and Arm Holdings rose 17%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index gained 4.3%.
Meta was another major contributor, gaining more than 11% following investor enthusiasm surrounding its new Muse AI assistant. The resulting move broadened beyond the largest AI beneficiaries into the semiconductor and infrastructure complex.
This matters for the Nasdaq-100 because the market is once again rewarding companies positioned along the AI investment chain — from compute and semiconductors to hyperscale infrastructure and applications.
2. Fundamentals Are Providing a Backdrop
The rally is not occurring in isolation from earnings.
Nasdaq's August index review showed that 85 of 102 Nasdaq-100 companies reporting earnings had exceeded EPS expectations, representing approximately 85% of the index by weight. Those companies beat consensus EPS expectations by an average of 11.2%.
That earnings backdrop has helped investors look through the volatility surrounding AI valuations.
The key issue from here is less whether AI spending remains strong and more whether the earnings generated by that spending can continue to justify elevated valuations.
3. Rates Are Helping the Growth Complex
The second leg of the rally has been macro.
Treasury yields retreated on Monday, while crude oil prices fell sharply on improving expectations around Middle East supply conditions. Reuters reported that the combination of lower yields and weaker oil prices helped support risk appetite across equities.
For long-duration technology stocks, the move in yields is particularly relevant. Lower discount rates improve the present value of future cash flows and can provide valuation support to high-growth equities.
However, the rates backdrop remains a potential constraint. Nasdaq's August market review noted that the 10-year Treasury yield had reached elevated levels, while longer-term yields remained under pressure from fiscal, inflation and AI-related capital-spending dynamics.
4. Oil Has Become a Key Cross-Asset Variable
Brent crude moved below $100 per barrel on Tuesday as the outlook for Gulf supply improved. Reuters reported that Iran had indicated a potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz under certain conditions, while Saudi Arabia resumed operations on its East-West pipeline.
For equities, lower oil prices potentially remove some pressure from inflation expectations and bond yields.
The relationship is therefore straightforward:
Lower oil → less inflation pressure → potentially lower yields → improved conditions for long-duration growth stocks.
The reverse scenario would create a meaningful headwind for the current Nasdaq-100 setup.
5. Today's Tape: Record Highs, but Watch the Follow-Through
The Nasdaq Composite reached an intraday record on Tuesday, its first such high since early June, with Alphabet among the notable contributors.
The Nasdaq-100 is also approaching its recent highs. Monday's close of 30,482.35 compares with a recent 52-week high around 30,762, leaving the index relatively close to its peak.
The important question for institutional investors is therefore whether this is simply a sharp recovery from the July/August volatility or the beginning of another sustained leg higher.
The answer will likely depend on earnings revisions, AI capital expenditure, Treasury yields and market breadth, rather than the headline index level alone.
6. What We Are Watching
AI Capex
Evidence that hyperscalers continue to increase AI infrastructure spending would reinforce the semiconductor and hardware complex.
Earnings Revisions
Positive revisions to forward earnings estimates would provide a stronger fundamental foundation for current valuations.
10-Year Treasury
A sustained move back above 5% would represent a potential valuation headwind for long-duration growth stocks. The recent decline in yields has been supportive, but the broader rates environment remains elevated.
Crude Oil
Oil remains one of the most important macro variables. A sustained move below $100 would ease some inflation concerns; renewed supply disruption could have the opposite effect.
Market Breadth
The durability of the rally will be easier to assess if participation continues to broaden beyond a small group of mega-cap technology names.
Institutional Takeaway
The latest Nasdaq-100 rally reflects a three-factor combination:
AI optimism + earnings resilience + macro relief.
The AI complex has re-established leadership, semiconductor stocks have regained momentum, and softer oil prices and Treasury yields have improved the environment for growth equities.
At the same time, the market is approaching recent highs after a rapid rebound. That makes forward earnings expectations and the rates backdrop increasingly important in determining whether the rally can broaden and persist.
For now, the market is rewarding renewed confidence in AI earnings power. The next phase will require that confidence to be supported by actual earnings growth and continued investment returns.
Bottom Line
The Nasdaq-100 has shifted from recovery mode toward a test of its prior highs.
The fundamental backdrop remains constructive, but the market is now entering a higher-expectation phase. AI spending, semiconductor earnings, Treasury yields and oil prices are likely to remain the principal cross-asset variables determining the next move.
