The end of an era — and the start of ours
Hi Compounders,
Yesterday, Friday September 18th, 2026, Warren Buffett wrote his final letter as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway.
He was 96. He had held the chairman title since 1970. Eight months ago he'd already handed the CEO seat to Greg Abel. Yesterday he handed the chairman's gavel to his son Howard, and quietly stepped into the role of "chairman emeritus."
His closing lines to shareholders were vintage Buffett — plain, unsentimental, warmer than they read at first:
"Greg runs the company; Howard will guard its culture and values — both worth more than anything on our balance sheet."
"Father Time always wins. The company is in excellent hands, and I look forward to remaining a shareholder alongside you."
For 48 years — from 1977 through 2024 — Buffett wrote a letter to Berkshire's shareholders every single spring. Not a press release. Not a quarterly script written by a comms team. A letter, in his own voice, published in plain text on a single page of Berkshire's website that hasn't changed its design since the 1990s.

Those 48 letters may be the greatest body of business writing ever produced by a single person. Every important idea in modern value investing lives inside them. Every one of them is free to read. Almost nobody actually does.
We think that's a shame. So starting today, and continuing every week for the next several months, we're going to walk through all 48 letters, one theme at a time — and connect what Buffett was writing about back then to what's happening in markets right now.
We're calling it The Buffett Files.
There couldn't be a better week to start.
Until next time, keep compounding …
